36% Of Workers Feel Their Boss Doesn’t Show Good Work-Life Balance

In this day and age, a healthy work-life balance is more important than ever.
However, how are we expected to balance our own lives when the people we work for are not balancing theirs? It is very difficult to expect and ask for a healthier work-life balance when the people in charge do not think of it as important.
With more and more companies putting an emphasis on work-life balance, like this company who offers the company helicopter to a working mother so she can commute quicker, it is encouraging to see. On the other hand, a recent study did reveal that despite this, working mothers are 40% more stressed than their childless counterparts, meaning we still have a long way to go.
A recent study by FlexJobs discovered that 36% of employees feel their boss or bosses don’t exhibit good work-life balance habits.
In a press release, Sara Sutton, founder and CEO of FlexJobs, said:
“Those in leadership roles influence how their employees view work-life balance. In fact, only 9% say their boss’s work habits make work-life balance easy. It’s important that good work-life balance is modelled from the top down, especially considering the positive impact that a happy and healthy workforce can have on productivity as well as company culture.”
What can companies do to help?
Overwhelmingly, people were of a consensus that flexible work options would be the solution to many of these problems. They believe flexible work, which includes things like working remote, a flexible schedule, going part-time or even freelancing, would allow them to be better parents, partners and even pet-owners.
- 87% surveyed said that flexible work would allow them to spend more time with friends and family.
- 89% said it would promote better self-care.
- 81% believed it would make them a better partner.
- 55% said it would make them better pet-owners.
- 61% of people with children, or planning to have children, said flexible work would make them better parents.
Health and well-being
It goes without saying that your work-life balance has a huge impact on your health and well-being. Nearly all of the people surveyed also agreed that flexible work options would improve their health and well-being massively.
- 97% of people who have mental health issues said flexible work would help them.
- 88% felt it would reduce their stress.
- 69% thought it would result in an increase in physical activity.
- 60% of people even believed it would help their romantic relationship, with 19% hopeful that it would!
